Beit Shammai

The disciples of Shammai the Elder, vice-president of the and teacher of halakha in the 1st century BCE, best known for his rivalry with Hillel. Shammai’s pupils were sharp witted, acerbic in their responses, and tending toward severity in judgement. Although a minority, they were evenly matched against the more liberal scholars of Beit Hillel.
