Hasmonean dynasty

A ruling family of Judea, beginning with Simon Maccabeus (also called Simon Thassi), son of Matityahu ben Yoḥanan HaKohen. The House of Asmoneus ruled from around 140 BCE until 37 BCE at the rise of the Herodian Dynasty. According to Josephus, Asmoneus, an ancestor of Mattiyahu and Simon. Their priestly family became known as the Maccabees. Judah, brother to Simon, led a revolt against the Greeks which is commemorated on the holiday of Hanukkah.
