Ketuba

A legal document given by a husband to his wife upon their marriage, stating his obligations to her during and after their marriage. The contract includes a lien on the husband’s estate, the minimum being 200 dinar for a virgin bride and 100 dinar for other brides. That sum is payable if she is divorced or widowed. The marriage contract gives the marriage halakhic legitimacy. Without it, the couple’s relationship is considered licentious.
