Rabbi Yosef Caro

Rabbi Yosef Caro ben Ephraim, b. 1488, d. 1575. Iberian talmudist at Safed, in Palestine. Fleeing Spain in the Inquisition, his family settled in Palestine in 1492. He is considered one of the greatest and most influential codifiers of Jewish law. Among his many works are the Shulḥan Arukh, the Beit Yosef commentary on the Ṭur, and his commentary on Maimonides, the Kesef Mishneh.
