Responsa

שאלות ותשובות – Questions and Answers. The Latin phrase, responsa, means “answers”, and is the root of the English word, “response”. This formal Latin term is used in studies of rhetoric and law. In a Jewish scholarship context, a responsum is used to impart clarifications to precedents in the law, or as a way to codify solutions to questions that arise after a law is established. Responsa are given by commentators on and within the Talmud.
